Circle
back to the beginning of time.
Beat. Circle back to the start of a life.
Pause. Circle forth to possible futures.
But also today. I watch in echo.
A family friend killed by a truck. A boy
on the news who took his own life. The world
presses in. The show widens a circle
of what a show can be. Of how we watch.
Is a poem too short to be the world?
Can a show expand and contract at once?
We must face the world and we need new shapes
the show seems to say. It pulses a beat.
I wear my fake fur. I bop in my seat.
Nobody wears real fur anymore. Right?

Unfurl is a subproject of Entanglings. I am posting a weekly poem in response to peformance works. I owe a debt to Rita Felski for the title, as she wrote about new approaches to critical writing (2015). I am working with the sonnet and other short forms in order to keep the project manageable and see what can be evoked with limited words. The poems are impressions, unedited, so they are a poetic documentation moreso than polished works. My aim is to build a conversation between poetry and performance and hopefully start some new conversations about different ways we can approach, generate and enjoy arts writing. If you enjoy it please subscribe or share with others!
Love the poem AND the idea of a splendid anomaly
I've forwarded this onto Ahmarnya _ I love being a conduit for your work and creating ever widening circles of connection between these artists and your writing. The project continues to make my week! It's a weekly anchor and line into all you are seeing and I mostly am not _ a conduit of sorts. I love that.
